Erythromycins and oleandomycins

Abstract

Erythromycin estolate (Ilosone - Lilly) and triacetyloleandomycin (Evramycin - Wyeth) can cause liver injury and a re-evaluation of these antibiotics is necessary. Both are sometimes termed “broad spectrum” but this is an error, for they have essentially the same antibacterial spectrum as penicillin, and resemble one another in many respects.
