Abstract

As frequently noted in both the medical literature and the lay press, a variety of penicillin derivatives can now be produced semi-synthetically, thus making it possible to “build in” such desirable properties as resistance to penicillinase. Ampicillin (Penbritin - Beecham) is the first penicillin with useful activity against Gram-negative bacilli.
