AB Oral feeding is often undesirable after major surgery, and fluid and electrolyte intake then has to be maintained intravenously. Problems in the postoperative management may occur because surgery itself interferes with the homeostatic regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance, or because a standard fluid replacement schedule is used without regard to the particular needs of the patient.
