It is described as ‘an anti-depressant with a pronounced sedative effect.’ Its thymoleptic activity is regarded as insufficient for the treatment of severe depression but ‘eminently suitable for the treatment of those patients whose complaints are difficult to define objectively and who experience a mixed complex of symptoms arising from the emotional problems associated with their everyday lives.’ This seems to exclude only the seriously ill and the euphoric.
