The limited list: effects in general practice

Abstract

In April 1985 the prescribing of drugs in certain categories under the National Health Service was restricted to the ‘limited list’. Some doctors were strongly opposed to this at the time; others were sympathetic to the idea in principle, but felt that the contents of the list and the way it was produced were ill considered. We were interested to see how the limited list affected prescribing by general practitioners, and in which specific areas problems arose.
