Abstract

Chronic ulceration of the skin due to venous stasis is a common problem. Standard treatments include pressure bandaging and rest and elevation of the limb; topical antibacterial agents, preparations designed to remove slough, and anti-inflammatory compounds are also used. Each has its advocates and controlled comparisons between them are lacking. Topical corticosteroid preparations are definitely contraindicated¹ except for any surrounding stasis eczema. Hazards of standard treatments include allergic contact dermatitis, especially to lanolin and neomycin.
