Antimicrobial prophylaxis for termination of pregnancy?

Abstract

Our article on antimicrobial prophylaxis in relation to surgery1 did not mention termination of pregnancy. Among 200 women having a suction termination, one-third developed bacteraemia with organisms from the vaginal flora2 - mostly coryneform organisms, but also anaerobic streptococci (3 cases) and Bacteroides (2). Three of the 200 women had postoperative fever and 5 others developed genital tract infections.
