What to look for in a new antibiotic

Abstract

New antimicrobial drugs that differ only slightly from existing ones complicate chemotherapy without improving it, increase costs, and may hinder recognition of unwanted effects. Promotional literature and early clinical trials propose when the drug might or could be used. The reader needs to decide whether he should use it, and when. These are not easy decisions, and deserve a systematic and critical approach.
