Abstract

Although the incidence of staphylococcal infection has probably decreased in recent years, breast abscesses in mothers and minor infections, such as pustules and conjunctivitis, in babies are still common. These infections are often acquired in hospital but may not become manifest until the mother and baby return home. Staphylococcal infection remains a problem because the organism is often resistant to one or more antibiotics and can cause major epidemics.
