Abstract

Tonsils have been operated on for millenia,1 the adenoids for a century.2 The operation became popular because respiratory tract symptoms are universal in childhood; the tonsils are easily seen by the parents, and are readily accessible to the surgeon. Nevertheless removal of tonsils and/or adenoids is of doubtful value except in carefully selected cases.3
