Local applications to wounds - I: cleansers, antibacterials, debriders

Abstract

Many ointments, powders, gels, sprays, irrigating fluids and dressings are promoted for application to open wounds. Some expensive products are claimed to speed healing, and so to justify their cost. The evidence for this is often lacking, however, and scientific appraisal of these products is long overdue. We begin with wound cleansing solutions, antibacterials and debriding agents.
