Corticosteroids in asthma : new detailed guidelines

Abstract

After our article ‘Corticosteroids in Asthma’ appeared last year (11 June 1990, page 45–46), guidelines for the management of the adult asthma were published jointly by the British Thoracic Society, the Royal College of Physicians, the King’s Fund Centre and the National Asthma Campaign1. The guidelines largely agree with the recommendations of our article but are more comprehensive and detailed. In particular, they support the introduction of inhaled corticosteroids in any asthmatic needing an inhaled bronchodilator more than once or at night. All doctors who treat patients with asthma should become conversant with theses guidelines. It would be useful to incorporate them in local guidelines for hospital doctors and GPs, in whatever detail is appropriate.
