Correction - phentermine: depression on withdrawal? (20 December 1974, p. 102)

Abstract

The table stated that phentermine can cause depression on withdrawal. The makers correctly point out that such depression has not been reported with use of the drug in recommended doses, and was not found in a study of 19 obese women taking the drug in which mood changes were specifically sought (J. M. Steel & M. Briggs, Brit. med. J. 1972, 3, 26. (Withdrawal depression has however been reported with larger doses (Fed. Register 1974, 39, 26461), and it seems prudent to assume that it may occur also in occasional cases with ordinary doses of phentermine in people with a depressive history.
