Correction: thrombolytic therapy and pre-existing clots

Abstract

The article on alteplase and anistreplase (28 December 1989, page 101) noted under ‘Unwanted effects’ that microemboli from disintegration of pre-existing clot are very dangerous, and suggested that ‘patients likely to have a pre-existing blood clot should not receive thrombolytic therapy’. A reader has convinced us that this advice could do harm, and we accept his arguments.
