Legal aspects of forced gastric lavage

Abstract

Gastric lavage is now known to be unnecessary or ineffective or hazardous in many circumstances where it used to be performed as a routine. This article concerns only the medico-legal aspects of forced gastric lavage in cases where positive clinical indications justify its use. We do not discuss the effectiveness or hazards of lavage and possible alternatives, such as the use of ipecac syrup.
