Update on drugs for herpes zoster and genital herpes

Abstract

We reviewed the use of aciclovir (Zovirax - Glaxo Wellcome) 6 years ago.1 Since then, two more oral antiherpetic drugs have been licensed - famciclovir (Famvir - SmithKline Beecham) and valaciclovir (Valtrex - Glaxo Wellcome). Here we discuss their efficacy and safety, and review their place in the management of patients with herpes zoster (shingles) and genital herpes, comparing them with aciclovir.
